PERFORMING ARTS REDEVELOPMENT UPDATE

Please see below for the latest drawings for the redevelopment that is to take place over summer on the lower floor of our school (music room and hall area).  The plans take into consideration that almost every existing wall is a structural wall and cannot be touched, modified or knocked down!

Please refer to my earlier blog post (see below) regarding the downloadable document with the finer details but essentially the music room will be more than doubled, a new outside learning/teaching area will be created with two access points (music room or multi-function room), a new multi-function room, new portable staging, improved lighting and sound and new air con with a reverse heating option.  Where the two practice rooms are indicated on the above plan is where the current music room is to give you an idea of the improved teaching space.  The area marked “music room” is currently the toilet and storage area.

It is all very exciting and we hope to have it go to tender within the next week.

For a downloadable version of the plans above and more slides please click the following link – Performing Arts Redevelopment Plans.  Please appreciate that the computer generated drawings are indicative only.

APPLICATION OF THE WEEK

Book creator for iPad is proving very popular and has been rated as one of the best 50 applications for 2011 and is currently number 1 in 35 countries.  The name says it all and I’m sure your child or children will really enjoy this application.  Please note the amount shown is in US dollars and apparently is 30% below the normal cost.

ESF STAKEHOLDERS SURVEY REMINDER

A reminder that the ESF Stakeholders Survey is about to open.  You should have or will shortly receive one invite to respond per child that you have enrolled at Peak School.

I strongly encourage all parents, appropriate students and staff to complete the survey so we can get a clear indication of what it is that we are doing well and what areas we really need to develop.

The survey results will be used to inform our new 3 Year Strategic Plan starting next academic year.

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP

Last weekend I attended, along with a number of staff, an International conference held in Hong Kong called 21st Century Learning.  Robyn Treyvuad was one of the guest speakers and she is a world authority on Digital Citizenship (including Cyber Safety).  As a school we are currently reviewing our policy and approach to digital citizenship (including Cyber Safety).  One of the websites that Robyn shared with us was one that has been set up with the sole purpose of supporting schools and parents to better understand how to ensure our children become responsible digital citizens.

The website is called Commonsense.org and can be found by clicking here.  Their policy states “Common Sense Media provides age-based media reviews and information so that parents can make informed choices about the media in their kid’s lives…”.  The website has useful tips for parents on a variety of topics including internet safety, family media management and cyber bullying.  It also reviews a large number of apps, movies, programs etc and even alerts parents to apps that children shouldn’t have access to.

It is American based but the issues are universal and very relevant.  The screenshot below provides an outline of what is available.

PTA CONTRIBUTION

We all know we have a very proactive and supportive PTA.  Along with organising events such as Bingo Night, Peak School Has Talent and the Danceathon they also contribute a significant amount to our teaching and learning.

The PTA have committed to fund the following this year

  • Mathletics $40,000 (already purchased at beginning of year)
  • iPads x 12 for the Chinese department (already purchased and in use daily)
  • $50,000 for library books (ongoing)
  • $20,000 for home readers (these have been recently purchased)
  • Full funding of Artist in Residence (currently working with children)
  • Greening Fund $47,000 (ongoing)
  • Commitment of $500,000 for Peforming Arts Redevelopment (July 2012)

This is a huge commitment and makes a significant impact on the experiences we can offer our children on a dialy basis.  My sincere thanks to the PTA for their continued support.

Please join the PTA at the upcoming coffee morning on the 16th of March starting at 8.45am to learn more about our wonderful PTA.
